Tips to Beat the Winter Blues

Feeling a little down this winter? We don’t blame you! Colder weather, shorter days and social distancing could take an emotional toll on anyone.

Fortunately, practicing self-care has been shown to help ease the winter blues. Here are a few tips that could help.

Turn Off the 24-Hour News Cycle
With many of us spending more time inside and at home, there has been a major increase in screen time. Between the 24-hour news cycle and social media, it can be hard to take a break from the stress and unpleasantness of the news.

Try to limit the amount of news you consume to one-hour per day.

Make Time for Physical Activity
It’s no secret that physical activity can help boost your mood and decrease your stress levels. Even with gyms closed, doing at-home aerobic activities, yoga, or strength training can give you all the physical activity that you need. Going for a walk outside, even for just 15 minutes, can have a huge impact on your mood and can provide you with your daily dose of sunshine.

Stick to a Sleep Routine
Establish a bedtime and wake-up time. It might help to incorporate a bedtime routine, such as eliminating screen time after a certain hour or sipping on some relaxing tea before bed. Experts say that adults need at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

Accomplish a Manageable Task
Start off the day by crossing a small task off your to-do list. Whether it is making the bed, picking up grocery items from the store, reorganizing a closet, tackling a work task, or cleaning out the fridge. No task it too small.

Completing a manageable task can give you a sense of accomplishment, achievement, and control over your life which you can carry with you and build upon throughout the rest of the day.

Relax by the Fire
Not only does a fire warm your bones on a cold winter’s day, but according to a study conducted by the University of Alabama, sitting by the fire can help to reduce your blood pressure. Enjoy a glass of wine, a cup of tea, a good book, or some company beside the fireplace.

Plan Something to Look Forward To
Plan a fun activity for yourself each week. It doesn’t have extravagant or over the top in order for you to look forward to it. Here are some ideas:

·      At-home spa day

·      Make a home-cooked meal for date night

·      Virtual game night with friends

·      Movie/Netflix marathon with snacks

·      Wake up early to watch the sunrise

·      Plan a sunset picnic

·      Go to a museum or local park

Seek Help
Do not be afraid or ashamed to seek outside help. Reach out to a friend, family member or co-worker. Contact a health professional if needed. And remember, you're not alone! It’s completely normal to feel a little down during the winter.
